Smiles! Everyone is smiling, laughing, and engaged in all the activities! What a great place Pretend City is! It might not be the “Happiest Place on Earth” but it surely is the “Happiest Place in Irvine!”
Years ago, as a primary grade teacher, I was excited to see an article in the newspaper introducing Pretend City to the community. When my grandson was old enough, we made our first visit. What an incredible place! We joined shortly afterwards, and many times went once a week. As other grandchildren came along, we continued our membership. Their cousins loved coming when they came into town.
It was such an honor to donate bags of items for the Art Center, extra funds to buy the giant foam blocks, choose an item that PC needed off the Christmas tree, a foam ride-on car that needed to be replaced, and then to donate monthly as a PlayBuilder. My next donation is for another shopping cart for Trader Joe’s. Pretend City provides STEAM activities at an appropriate developmental stage. I feel that donating to Pretend City is an investment in my grandchildren’s experiences and those of the thousands of kids who will enjoy, and learn at the same time
I think it is important that all people are valued- the young people who hand out the timecards by the front door, the Autism sensitivity nights, and the multicultural events. We love it when Miss Nicole greets us by name when we check in. My grandchildren also anticipate the changing exhibits in the back room. They liked the bug displays, hands-on music instruments, painting the car outside, and a zip-line. So much fun! We never have to worry about the weather and members get in an hour early!
We are so blessed to have Pretend City close by. I mention it to the parents I talk to at the park and when I’m waiting to pick up the kids from school. It is truly a remarkable place- a place where everyone SMILES!
