Safety Smart Program

June 22

Teaching elementary and pre-school age children life-saving fire safety and burn prevention skills.

About the Play Partner: Since 2001, The L.A. Troupe, Theatre-in-Education has partnered with The Children’s Burn Foundation to bring fire and burn safety prevention programs to at-risk schools in California, Texas, Nevada, Florida, and Indiana. Koni McCurdy, artistic director of the Troupe, became aware of the need for fire safety education when she played the Ringmaster in the Sesame Street pilot program that featured Bert and Ernie teaching fire safety messages. When she moved to California, she wanted to continue her work with fire and burn safety education and created a show specifically designed for tk-5 students in Los Angeles schools. When, in 2001 managing director Nicholas Dalton-Pawle joined the Troupe, he contacted the Children’s Burn Foundation, and the companies began working together to reach children pre-school through fifth grade with life-saving messages. Our partnership has enabled the program to expand to the point where, by 2024, we will have reached over one million children.
