We Read Wednesdays

September 27, 2023

Immerse yourself in the magical world of words and art at our We Read Wednesdays Celebration, where diversity, equity, and inclusion take center stage at 11 AM with Jocelyn Francisco, followed by choosing your own pot and plant to take home to care for!

About the play partner: Jocelyn “Joy” Francisco, Ph.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, writer and independent publisher of Little Yellow Jeepney. Joy is grateful for the opportunities that living in the United States has brought to her and her family. The stories of her father growing up in the Philippines has humbled her in many ways. This has been the source of motivation for her as she pursued a career as a clinical psychologist working to help others and performing services that help solve public health issues, including generational trauma. “Through a compassionate approach to therapy, my goal is to cultivate the kind of therapeutic relationship that leads to true transformation and lasting change.” As a parent, Joy was inspired to write and self-publish the book Little Yellow Jeepney and a subsequent Filipino language series: Oh My Kulay!, Isa, Dalawa, Tatlo…Ito Ay Obalo!, Abakada, Balikbayan Box, Pamilya Ko, The Bitter Melon, and Damdaman.

“I believe in teaching children to not only appreciate, communicate and interact with people across different cultures and in other countries, but also provide them with a stronger sense of cultural identity in an effort to preserve their own culture.” These books were created to be an accessible resource for others to share the Tagalog language with both children and adults and be a beautiful connection to the culture.
