Korean American Celebration
Thursday, January 13
Join us as we celebrate Korean American culture, provide activities that create connection to our Korean community members, and share more on the dishes enjoyed by our Korean friends!
Purpose Behind the Play: Fine motor development, appreciation of cultural diversity, social and emotional learning
Smart Art (Times Vary):
- Flag Exploration- Today we’re using the Korean flag as a provocation to create and interpret!
- Cultural Connection– Our sensory bin will hold an array of materials that are symbolic of culture, as well as our Korean Café!
Sensational Story Time
- (11 AM & 2:30 PM): Bee-Bim Bop> In bouncy rhyming text, a hungry child tells about helping her mother make bee-bim bop: shopping, preparing ingredients, setting the table, and finally sitting down with her family to enjoy a favorite meal.
- (3:15 PM): The Name Jar> Being the new kid in school is hard enough, but what happens when nobody can pronounce your name? Having just moved from Korea, Unhei is anxious about fitting in. So instead of introducing herself on the first day of school, she decides to choose an American name from a glass jar. But while Unhei thinks of being a Suzy, Laura, or Amanda, nothing feels right. With the help of a new friend, Unhei will learn that the best name is her own.
Grown-up Tip: A appreciation for cultural diversity begins when our children are young – and one of the most natural ways we can appreciate other cultures is through the enjoyment of eating diverse foods. The next time you order in or go out, talk about the culture as well as the food, and have fun trying new flavors and different utensils!
