Superior Grocers Donor Spotlight
Superior Grocers is one of the largest independently owned chain of grocery stores in Southern California. Beginning its operations in 1981 with one store, Superior has experienced steady growth for over 41 years, now operating 74 stores throughout Southern California, Central Valley, and Las Vegas.
Superior prides itself in providing Superior Quality, Superior Variety and Superior Value to the communities that it serves. Superior Grocers is a strong community partner and continually supports programs that help bring a positive impact to its customers, including education, health awareness efforts and many local youth organizations and non-profit groups.
In May of 2024, Superior Foundation presented a $25,000 grant to Pretend City for Museums for All, a national program that allows those receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) to gain free or reduced admission to more than 1,300 museums throughout the United States simply by presenting their EBT card and a photo ID. Superior Foundation’s gift allows Pretend City to provide access to these families for just $3 a person.
“Superior Grocers first gift to Pretend City was inspired by our shared commitment to supporting the growth and development of young minds. At Superior Grocers and The Superior Foundation, we have always prioritized educational initiatives and community engagement. Pretend City’s mission to provide children with immersive, hands-on learning experiences aligns perfectly with our values. We saw an opportunity to support an organization that makes a significant impact on children’s lives, fostering creativity and learning through play,” shared Jancie Song Fisher, Head of Strategic Partnerships for Superior Grocers.
“Pretend City makes education accessible and engaging for all children, regardless of their background. By offering programs like the Museums for All initiative, Pretend City ensures that even families facing financial challenges can enjoy and benefit from the museum’s offerings. This inclusive approach not only provides valuable educational experiences but also helps bridge gaps in access to cultural and learning resources, empowering children and families across Southern California.”
“Pretend City mission aligns with our company’s goals by supporting education, community involvement, and equal access to opportunities. The Superior Foundation has always been dedicated to investing in the well-being and potential of our communities, particularly through initiatives that empower children and families. This aligns with our broader mission to nurture young minds and foster a brighter future for all.”
“We wish everyone knew about the incredible breadth of programs and resources that Pretend City offers. Beyond being a museum, it is a vital community hub that supports child development in numerous ways. From special events and health screenings to inclusive programs like Neurodivergent Family Nights, Pretend City provides a welcoming space for children to learn and grow. It is a place where children from all walks of life can come together, explore their interests, and build essential skills in a fun, engaging environment.”
“We are proud to support Pretend City and encourage others to do the same. By partnering with Pretend City, you are investing in the future of our communities by providing children with access to education, creativity, and exploration. The work Pretend City does goes beyond entertainment; it creates lasting memories and foundational skills that children will carry with them throughout their lives. Let’s continue to support this incredible institution and ensure that all children have the opportunity to experience the magic of learning through play.”
Superior Foundation, its non-profit arm, was founded 25 years ago. The foundation’s efforts make a direct connection with local communities providing ongoing support to schools, youth programs and scholarship foundations.
Over $3.8 million has been donated to schools and non-profits in support of youth and education in Southern California since 1998.
