Institute of Museum and Library Services announces Pretend City as 2017 Finalist for National Medal for Museum and Library Service

IRVINE, CA: The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced that California’s Pretend City, The Children’s Museum of Orange County, is among the 30 finalists for the 2017 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to the community. For 23 years, the award has celebrated institutions that demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service and are making a difference for individuals, families and communities.

“We at Pretend City are honored to be nominated for our contribution back to our community through our Good To Go From Head To Toe Program, a Children & Families Commission initiative,” said Sandra Bolton, Executive Director of Pretend City.

Good To Go provides free developmental assessments, screenings, and health checkups for children ages 0-5 years by highly qualified and respected professionals. Through community outreach, readily available resources, on-site screening events and educational classes, the Good To Go From Head To Toe initiative educates parents/caretakers about what developmental milestones are, how to assess these milestones and encourages regular developmental screenings.

IMLS is encouraging community members who visited Pretend City, The Children’s Museum of Orange County to share their story on the IMLS Facebook page. To Share Your Story and learn more about how these institutions make an impact, please visit www.facebook.com/USIMLS.

The National Medal winners will be announced later this spring. The representatives from winning institutions will travel to Washington, D.C. to be honored at the National Medal award ceremony.
