Today’s a special day in June that recognizes the American flag. It’s called Flag Day. This day may be a lesser-known day of the year, but it has been official for over 100 years.
Play Purpose: exploration of interests, building general knowledge
Smart Art (Ongoing): Red, White, and Blue – A Flag for You! > Create your own flag with myriad fabrics and colors, paints, and stamps. And just like Betsy Ross, stitch your flag with child-safe needles, and lots of colorful yarn and other fun textured materials.
Purpose Behind the Play: Fine motor development, artistic expression; cause and effect, cultural awareness

Let’s learn how our flag brings us together in both good times and bad times. We’ll get to see where we can typically see our flag and what it means!
Super Science (Directly following Story Time): Matching Flags Game > Children will identify flags of the world, and search for them on our colorful map of the countries.
Grown-up Tip: Many young children may know that the American Flag is red, white, blue, and has stars and stripes. But why? Find a book that is age-appropriate for your child to understand this piece of American history. This will help in learning about other countries’ flags and how they vary in representation.
