On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…holiday fun at Pretend City! Join us for our exciting 12 Days of Christmas Countdown! Each day leading up to Christmas, we will “unwrap” a new holiday activity at the museum! Get in the holiday spirit as we gear up for Christmas and countdown the days!
Purpose Behind the Play: Imaginative play, social and emotional development, language/literacy, math and counting concepts, cultural exposure
Featured activities will include the following:
- Sunday, December 12:
Sensational Storytime (12 NOON – 3 PM): How to Catch an Elf > Warm, lavish illustrations by James Bernardin bring to life a timeless tale by Lori Walburg, a story that will help families celebrate the mystery and miracle of Christmas―for many Christmases to come. A Candy Cane Science activity will follow this storytime.
- Wednesday, December 15:
Sensational Storytime (11:00 AM and 2 PM): One Snowy Night > Jewel-like colors, animals with unmistakable character, and a flocked woolly hat on every page enhances this tender story about a little hedgehog who is caught unprepared by a chilly winter wind. A red winter hat craft will follow this storytime.

Sensational Storytime (11:00 AM and 2 PM): Over and Under the Snow> Did you know that some animals rest under the snow? Find out more about what’s under your feet when you’re walking on snow!
- Friday, December 17:
Sensational Storytime (11:00 AM and 2 PM): Winter Trees> What happens to our trees when it snows? Using colors and textures, we will explore more about what our trees feel during the winter season!
- Saturday, December 18:
Sensational Storytime (11:00 AM and 2 PM): Little Blue Truck’s Christmas> Have you gotten your Christmas tree yet? Can you imagine FOUR Christmas trees on top of your car? Help up count and load four trees in the Little Blue Truck!
- Sunday, December 19:
Sensational Storytime (12 NOON – 3 PM): The Night the Lights Went out on Christmas> Based on acclaimed singer-songwriter Ellis Paul’s Christmas song, this hilarious tale focuses on an inevitable part of the holiday season–lights! Help us create our own light strand using your handprints to follow the story!

Sensational Storytime (11:00 AM and 2 PM): Oh, What a Christmas > Have you ever thought about what you happen if Santa’s sleigh broke while he was traveling to deliver presents? How would he get all the children their gifts before they woke up? Come read and see how Santa’s reindeer help him save Christmas!
- Thursday, December 23:
Sensational Storytime (11:00 AM and 2 PM): One Christmas Night > Christmas is here and Little Hedgehog’s house isn’t quite ready! Find out how he uses the natural world to create decorations that makes his home feel more “Christmas-y!”
Grown-up Tip:Put your own twist on the 12 days of Christmas!Grab a notebook or some blank sheets of paper and create a book collaboratively as a family unit. Write and/or draw of all the events and activities that occur in your household as you prepare for Christmas Day! This will support your child’s literacy and math development along with supporting their understanding of time!
