Thursday, December 16
Feliz Navidad! It’s time to celebrate Las Posadas! This colorful Mexican holiday celebrates the 9 days leading up to Christmas! Join us for some festive activities, art, and events at Pretend City!
Purpose Behind the Play: Imaginative play, social and emotional understandings, language/literacy, cultural exposure/diversity, art exploration, math/counting concepts, exposure to different languages
- Smart Art: Visit the Art Studio to make colorful Las Posadas mementos to take home: Posada Placemat – On the 9th day of Las Posadas families gather for a delicious feast. Make sure you are prepared by creating your very own holiday placemat.
- Sensational Story Time (11:30 AM): Join us in Orange Plaza for an engaging story time that will introduce your child to Las Posadas. We will read Uno, Dos, Tres, Posada! By Virginia Kroll. This story is about a little girl celebrating a traditional Posada tradition that happens all over the world on each of the nine nights before Christmas.
Grown-up Tip: December is filled with celebrations and traditions of all kinds. Part of the fun is learning all about how and what other families celebrate. In Mexico, Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) is when families attend a midnight mass before returning home to a late-night feast! Do you have friends who celebrate this way? Through exposure to other traditions and beliefs, children become aware of all the similarities and differences in their daily lives. Learning about cultures different from our own is important to understanding the world and community we are a part of.
