Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day): Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

May 6, 2022

Friday, May 6

Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with us as we explore the history, traditions, and culture of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States.

Tango no Sekku was originally the celebration of boys, but was changed to Kodomo no Hi as a way to celebrate all children! The day is marked by colorful carp-shaped streamers.

Purpose Behind the Play: Social-emotional development, self-regulation, color identification, critical thinking, and locomotor movement.

Smart Art (on-going):

  • Carps & KIoinobori: On Tango no Sekku, it is tradition for families to hang Koinobori outside of their home to celebrate! In the art studio today we will make our own Koinobori to hang at our own homes in honor of boys day!
  • Kabuto Origami > We will explore Origami to resemble the traditional warrior helmet, Kabuto.

Sensational Story Time in Orange Plaza (11 AM & 2:30 PM):

  • A Carp for Kimiko > A wonderful look into Japanese tradition and culture through the eyes of a young girl, Kimiko.

Grown-up Tip: Talk to your child about how everyone has a different experience, despite living in the same country, state, or city. Discussing these differences gives your child language and teaches them empathy.  Learning about other cultures nurtures empathy and a broader view of our world.

RSVP:    Not required
