puzzleNational Puzzle Day at Pretend City

Puzzles and board games strengthen your child’s critical thinking skills. Today at Pretend City, join us for National Puzzle Day; a day full of lessons to engage your child in critical thinking situations.

  • Smart Art (in the Art Studio): > We’re combining today’s special celebration with our weekly art studio theme and creating White Snowflakes out of puzzle pieces. This cool activity is a no brainer!
  • Engaging Engineering (11:30am): Blue Block Fun > Children will meet in our Traveling Exhibit for a fun team building challenge utilizing The Imagination Playground. Can your team replicate our structure made of blue blocks? Which team will have the fastest time?
  • Growing Up Great Game (3:00pm): Puzzle Piece Quest > Join us in the Orange Plaza for a fun scavenger hunt through the museum in search of giant puzzle pieces. Bring the puzzle pieces back to Orange Plaza where we will put the puzzle together for one last clue leading the children to a fun surprise!

Grown-up Tip: Create your very own puzzle at home by printing out a fun picture from online or using one of your children’s works of art. Laminate the picture and then cut it into puzzle sized pieces and do this puzzle together as a family.

Purpose Behind the Play: Fine motor and dexterity practice, gross motor development, critical thinking and problem solving.

The power of puzzles! Research is now showing the quantifiable benefits of puzzles which can lead to an improvement in memory retention, and decrease the chances of developing certain types of illnesses included memory loss and dementia. Encouraging children to exercise their brain and practice puzzles like math word problems or even jigsaw puzzles. These skills prepare us for the future because they give children the confidence to solve real-world problems.
