Let’s Celebrate the Beginning of Ramadan!

Tuesday, May 15 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

We’re celebrating Ramadan at Pretend City! In the Islamic Faith, Ramadan is a month of blessings; a month full of opportunities, benefits and blessings for Muslims around the world. Exposing children at a young age to different faiths and cultures is an important lesson in diversity and tolerance. A big part of this religious holiday is participating in daily fasting and although young children aren’t old enough to fast this doesn’t mean that they can’t learn about Ramadan and the concept of fasting in Islam.

Times:  Morning Activities: Simple Science @ 11:00am

Afternoon Activities: Sensational Storytime @ 3:30pm

*Scheduled Activity Times are subject to change*
Today’s activities will expose children to Islamic Faith traditions and practices and will include the following:

  • Smart Art: Crescent Moon– The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, and the beginning of each month is determined by when the new moon is seen. This means that Muslims around the world await with great anticipation the announcement that the new moon – known as the ‘hilal’ in Arabic – has been sighted. The excitement is greatest ahead of the crescent which will herald the first of Ramadan. Stop by the Art Studio today to make your very own crescent moon.
  • Simple Science (11:00am): Phases of the Moon – Since the Islamic Calendar is based on the lunar cycle this is a great time to educate children on the different phases of the moon. Today in the Real Cafe we will provide children with an edible and fun way to learn about the moon phases using Oreo cookies.
  • Sensational Storytime (3:30pm): My First Ramadan – Join us in Orange as we read My First Ramadan by Karen Katz. Look! There is the new moon in the sky. It’s time for Ramadan to begin. Follow along with one young boy as he observes the Muslim holy month with his family. This year, the narrator is finally old enough to fast, and readers of all ages will be interested as he shares his experiences of this special holiday in Islam.

Grown-up Tip: In Islam, children are taught in their early childhood that charity giving is highly encouraged as long as they are financially able to do so. This month in celebration of Ramadan think of ways that you can model charity to your children. If you are financially able, you can donate to our educational programs HERE. Your donations will go to programs such as our FREE monthly Autism Nights, FREE Health Screenings, and Field Trip scholarships for children in poor communities. If you are not financially able to donate and would still like to give back to your community, Pretend City has many volunteer opportunities that you can participate in.
