Groundhog Day

Saturday, February 2 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Groundhog Day at Pretend City

Celebrate with Punxsutawney Phil and learn about Groundhog Day at Pretend City! Together we will find out if we have a long winter or an early spring. We will also be learning why Americans celebrate this unique holiday.

Purpose Behind the Play: Concept Development, healthy habits, number concepts, language development,

  • Smart Art (in the Art Studio)Groundhog Puppet > Time to make your very own textured woodchuck at the art studio. Use your new pet to help decide whether we will have a long winter or early spring.
  • Language Lesson (11:30a): Preposition Phil > We know that Phil pops out of his hill, but where else might he go? Join us as we practice prepositional concepts (ex. in/out, front/back) with our own groundhog characters to enhance our learning.
  • Nature Tales (3:00pm): Seeing Seasons > PBS SoCAL will be here to help us learn about, identify, and prepare for the different seasons using hands-on technology.

The groundhog plays an important role on Groundhog Day.

Grown-up Tip: Help your child create the story of Punxsutawney Phil. Gather together art supplies, and encourage your child to tell the story, illustrating it with fun pictures of a groundhog. This will build your child’s literacy and language skills.
