Groundhog Day at Pretend City

Celebrate with Punxsutawney Phil and learn about Groundhog Day at Pretend City! Together we will find out if we have a long winter or an early spring. We will also be learning why Americans celebrate this unique holiday.

Purpose Behind the Play: Concept Development, healthy habits, number concepts, language development,  

  • Smart Art (in the Art Studio)Groundhog Puppet > Time to make your very own textured woodchuck at the art studio. Join us in the Art Studio today as we create a Punxsutawney Phil puppet using brown paper bags. Use your new pet to help decide whether we will have a long winter or early spring.
  • Simple Science (11:30a): Why is the Weather Changing?> Time to explore the weather and seasons! Local weather researchers will join to explain why there are weather changes and create seasons
  • Simple Science (3:00 pm): Animal Shadows> What animal is it? Let’s explore animal shadows using light and creating hand puppets.

The groundhog plays an important role in Groundhog Day.

Grown-up Tip: Help your child create the story of Punxsutawney Phil. Gather together art supplies, and encourage your child to tell the story, illustrating it with fun pictures of a groundhog. This will build your child’s literacy and language skills.
