Eid al-Fitr Eid Celebration, the End of Ramadan!

Monday, June 26 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

We’re celebrating at Pretend City! Eid al-Fitr, or Eid, is a Muslim holiday which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. Celebrations continue for one, two, or three days, and people wish each other Eid Mubarak (Blessed Eid) or Eid Said (Happy Eid). Celebrations include gatherings to view the new moon, decorating homes inside and out, family visits, eating special sweet foods, neighborhood fairs, visits to amusement parks, wearing new clothes and giving and receiving gifts. Exposing children at a young age to different faiths and cultures is an important lesson in diversity and tolerance.

Time:  A.M. Activities:  Sensational Storytime @ 11:00 a.m.

P.M. Activities:   Educational Video @ 12:00 p.m.

*Activity times may vary and are subject to change*

Today’s activities will explore Islamic Faith traditions and practices and will include the following:

  • Smart Art: Henna Hands – In Pakistan henna is considered very auspicious for religious occasions and weddings. An Eid celebration would not be complete without using henna to decorate hands. So today in the Art Studio children can trace their own hands and then decorate that hand drawing with red and brown crayons. What design will your child choose?
  • Sensational Storytime (11:00am): It’s Ramadan – Join us in Orange Plaza at 11:30 a.m. as we read It’s Ramadan. In this delightful book, Curious George is celebrating Ramadan with his friend Kareem and his family. George helps Kareem with his first fast and joins in the evening celebration of tasting treats and enjoying a special meal. Then, George helps make gift baskets to donate to the needy, and watches for the crescent moon with the man in the yellow hat. Finally, George joins in the Eid festivities to mark the end of his very first Ramadan.
  • Educational Video (12:00pm): It’s time to Celebrate Eid – Join us in Community Room 2 at 3:30 p.m. at Noon as we watch an educational video about the Eid celebration and all that people do to celebrate this special day.
  • Arabic Language Lesson (12:15pm): Join us in the Library exhibit space for a mini Arabic language lesson facilitated by our partners from Crescent Academy.

Grown-up Tip: In Islam, children are taught in their early childhood that charity giving is highly encouraged as long as they are financially able to do so. This month in celebration of Ramadan think of ways that you can model charity to your children. If you are financially able, you can donate to our educational programs HERE. Your donations will go to programs such as our FREE monthly Autism Nights, FREE Health Screenings, and Field Trip scholarships for children in poor communities. If you are not financially able to donate and would still like to give back to your community, Pretend City has many volunteer opportunities that you can participate in.
