Christmas Countdown

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…holiday fun at Pretend City! Join us for our exciting 12 Days of Christmas Countdown! Each day leading up to Christmas, we will “unwrap” a new holiday activity at the museum! Get in the holiday spirit as we gear up for Christmas and countdown the days!

Time: Activity times vary based on scheduled special day programming times.

Featured activities will include the following:

  • Tuesday, December 12:
    • Sensational Story Time (2:00pm): The Legend of the Candy Cane > Warm, lavish illustrations by James Bernardin bring to life a timeless tale by Lori Walburg, a story that will help families celebrate the mystery and miracle of Christmas―for many Christmases to com A Candy Cane Science activity will follow this story time.
  • Wednesday, December 13:
    • Sensational Story Time (11:30am): One Snowy Night > Jewel-like colors, animals with unmistakable character, and a flocked woolly hat on every page enhances this tender story about a little hedgehog who is caught unprepared by a chilly winter wind. A red winter hat craft will follow this story time.
  • Thursday, December 14:
    • Sensational Story Time (11:30am): Snowmen at Christmas > Have you ever wondered what snowmen do for Christmas? Well, now’s your chance to find out! A Snowman craft will follow this story time.
  • Friday, December 15:
    • Sensational Story Time (11:30am): The Jolly Christmas Postman > The Jolly Postman delivers letters, and presents too, in his Christmas postbag. A Christmas letter writing activity will follow this story time.
  • Saturday, December 16:
    • Sensational Story Time (2:00pm): ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas > “Twas the night before Christmas” begins Clement C. Moore. The tradition continues in a new All Aboard Book, with gem-like illustrations capturing all the magic of this special season. A Christmas Stocking craft will follow this story time.

    • Sensational Story Time (11:30am): Santa’s Favorite Story > Discover the true meaning of the holidays as Santa Claus retells the story of the first Christmas in this sweet picture book from Hisako Aoki and Ivan Gantschev. A Christmas nativity craft will follow this story time.
  • Tuesday, December 19:
    • Sensational Story Time (11:30am): Willowby’s Christmas Tree > Christmas is here and Mr. Willowby’s tree has arrived! There’s just one big problem . . . the tree is too tall to fit in his parlor. How will he make it fit? A Christmas Tree Star craft will follow this story time.
  • Wednesday, December 20:
    • Sensational Story Time (11:30am): The Little Christmas Tree > Written by Dugald Steer and Illustrated by Susanna Ronchi – A winter tale with a touch of magic! Learn how Santa’s toys bring the magic of Christmas all the way home to the North Pole in this touching embossed story that teaches an important lesson about caring. A Christmas tree craft will follow this story time.
  • Thursday, December 21:
    • Sensational Story Time (3:30pm): Cookie Count > Cookie Count, by Award-winning author Robert Sabuda, is a mouth-watering book of lavish surprises — a baker’s bounty of ten pop-up spreads. A Christmas cookie craft will follow this story time.
  • Friday, December 22:
    • Sensational Story Time (11:30am): The Gingerbread Man > The classic tale of The Gingerbread Man comes to life in this vibrant retelling perfect or beginning readers. A Christmas gingerbread craft will follow this story time.
  • Saturday, December 23:
    • Sensational Story Time (11:30am): Night Before the Night Before Christmas > It’s December 23, and Christmas is just around the corner. This story by Natasha Wing follows the rhythms and meter of the classic Christmas poem, yet gives it her own entirely original twist. A Christmas mouse craft will follow this story time.

Grown-up Tip: Put your own twist on the 12 days of Christmas. Write a book together as a family of all the events and activities that occur in your household that lead up to Christmas Day! This will work on your child’s skills for reading standards for information text.
