Celebrate Week of the Young Child

Monday, April 16 @ 10:00 am - Friday, April 20 @ 4:00 pm

week of the young child

Celebrate with us all week long as we celebrate the Young Child! This annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) focuses on raising awareness and showing the importance of early childhood education! Join us for fun activities every day this week!

Time: Activity Times Will Vary

Music Monday: Through music, children develop math, language, and literacy skills – All while having fun and being active! Make up and record your own unique version of a song or write your own, and share it on NAEYC’s Facebook page or post to Twitter using the hashtag #woyc18.
  • Music & Movement (11am & 12pm): Join us in Orange Plaza to find the beat and connect music, movement, and math. We will practice clapping, drumming, and stomping to the beat of music while counting.

Tasty Tuesday: This fun, food-themed day is about more than just cheese and crackers. Cooking together connects math with literacy skills, science, and more. With the rise in childhood obesity, you can encourage healthy nutrition and fitness habits at home and in the classroom by creating your own healthy snacks and then sharing the recipes and photos of your creations on NAEYC’s Facebook page or post to Twitter using the hashtag #woyc18.

  • Snack Station (11:00 & 3:30pm): Veggie Tasting > Encouraging your child to taste and enjoy healthy foods can sometimes be difficult. Join us in the real café for a fun lesson on veggies and a veggie tasting that will be sure to delight the taste buds and help you child get excited about healthy eating.

Work Together Wednesday: When Children build together they explore math, science and engineering concepts and develop their social and early literacy skills. Children can use any building material—from a fort of branches on the playground to a block city in the classroom, or a hideaway made from couch pillows at home. Build and share pictures of children’s creations on NAEYC’s Facebook page or Twitter using the #woyc18 hashtag.

  • Engaging Engineering (11:00 & 3:30pm): Join us in our Construction Exhibit as we work together as a team to build an AWE-MAZING structure. What we make and how BIG we make it will be up to you and your child! Bring your cameras and your building expertise as we build an AWE-MAZING structure together.
Artsy Thursday: Think, problem solve, create. Children develop creativity, social skills and fine motor skills with open-ended art projects where they can make choices, use their imaginations, and create with their hands. On Artsy Thursday celebrate the joy and learning children experience when engaged in creative art making. Use any materials—from crayons to paint, clay to crafts! Create and share a photos of your children’s creations on NAEYC’s Facebook page or Twitter using the #woyc18 hashtag.
  • Smart Art (Full Day): Visit our Paint Yard today and help to paint our Art Car. This is the only month of the year that your child will be able to participate in this creative endeavor.

Family Friday: Engaging and supporting families is what we are all about here at Pretend City! Share pictures and stories about your family on NAEYC’s Facebook page or post to Twitter using the hashtag #woyc18 as we celebrate the unique role families play in their children’s learning and development.

  • Family Fitness Fun (2:00pm): Join us for some Family Fitness Fun Activities in Orange Plaza. Exercising with your child is the best way to stay fit and model healthy fitness behaviors for your children.

Play Partner: NAEYC, Pretendgineers and Brain Builders, and our experienced stage staff of trained early childhood and development educators.
