Ash Wednesday at Pretend City

Wednesday, February 26:

Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, a Christian observance and preparation for the Easter celebration. Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the Catholic calendar. Congregate with us as we learn about this religious observance through crafts, stories, and activities.

Purpose Behind the Play: Concept development, prosocial and helping behaviors, number concepts through arranging and patterning, Language and reading practice, physical development, visual perceptional skills, and cognitive skills.

  • Smart Art (Art Studio-Times Vary): Community Art Project > As Lent begins, we want to encourage each other to practice pro-social and helping behaviors by performing good deeds. Today, we will work together to create a beautifully stained glass art piece.
  • Sensational Storytime (11:30 am): The Very Hungry Caterpillar > Gather together as we read this classic tale and relate the transformation the caterpillar makes to the changes Christians strive to implement during the season of Lent.
  • Holiday History (3:30 pm): Rosary Craft > Lenten season is all about praying, fasting, and alms. Bring your little ones to our circle time as we talk about these three concepts and their importance to the season. After our discussion, we will be making small rosaries out of art supplies.

Grown-up Tip:  This Christian celebration focuses on reflection and repentance. It is important to observe your child’s actions and motivations to provide support when needed. One technique is to have your child “take a break” when they are faced with a difficult or challenging situation. Taking a break teaches the child to reflect and consider their actions before reacting. This is a powerful coping skill that will encourage them to talk about the problem and practice self-regulation.
