Let’s Celebrate Diwali

Wednesday, October 18, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Clean your house and open your windows! Today, we will celebrate the Hindu holiday Diwali, the Festival of Lights, with the following cultural activities:

Time:    Morning Activities: Music & Movement @ 11:00am

Afternoon Activities: Holiday History @ 3:30pm

  • Art Studio Sessions:
    • Rangoli Creations > Join us in the Art Studio today as we create Rangoli patterns using chalk. Rangoli’s are colorful designs made on the floor near the entrance to a house to welcome guests. At Diwali, Hindus draw bright Rangoli patterns to encourage the goddess Lakshmi to enter their home.
    • Diwali Diya Paper Craft > The Indian New Year is Diwali and we celebrate good over evil by lighting rows of lamps or ‘diyas’. A Diwali Diya is a small lamp and today we will make one in the Art Studio using our scissor skills, paper, and glue.
  • Music & Movement (11:00am): Diwali Song > Join us for this fun celebration song all about Diwali as we dance and sing in Orange Plaza!
  • Holiday History (3:30pm): A Card for Sister > The fifth day of Diwali is called Bhaiya-Dooj (Bhai Dooj, which is a special day for brothers to celebrate their sisters and give them gifts. In honor of this special day we will make a special card for our sister or someone like a sister in our life.

Grown-up Tip:  By attending different cultural events and festivals that celebrate things like the Chinese New Year or the Hindu festival of colors you are providing your child actual experiences that will have a profound influence on what your children think and believe. This will give them a sense of personal meaning and connection with others. Even those people that have different beliefs or cultural practices.
