Jannie & John Christensen – Champions for Play and Possibility

Dec 19, 2025

At Pretend City Children’s Museum, every gift tells a story of belief in the power of play. For Jannie and John Christensen, that story began with a shared passion for early childhood development and a deep love for Pretend City. “Our family loves Pretend City,” Jannie says. “When we learned more about its mission to reach every family, our involvement grew. Pretend City’s work is something we can truly get behind.”

For the Christensens, Pretend City represents more than a museum—it’s a place where imagination becomes a foundation for lifelong learning. They believe the most important work Pretend City does is helping every child maximize their potential. “The opportunities here are endless,” John explains. “Through imaginative play, children develop intellect, decision-making skills, creativity, and more. Pretend City meets families where they are—regardless of capacity, abilities, or background. It’s inclusive, accommodating, and welcoming.”

Their connection to Pretend City is personal and profound. Each visit with their grandchildren brings new discoveries and joy. “Every time we come in, we see their imaginations flourish,” Jannie shares. “Because creativity is flourishing, so is their decision-making and intellect. It’s priceless to watch them grow in such an enriching environment.”

The Christensens have favorite spots they return to time and again—the sandy beach, water play, construction zone, Trader Joe’s, and the thrill of driving vehicles around the city. Seasonal exhibits add even more excitement, creating fresh experiences for families year after year.

Beyond the fun, Jannie and John are passionate about Pretend City’s commitment to inclusivity. They want everyone to know about programs like field trips for Title 1 schools and special family evenings for neurodivergent members. And they’re thrilled about what’s next: the new Pretend City at the Great Park. “It will be even more exciting and able to serve our community at a greater capacity,” Jannie says.

Their generosity extends beyond their own family. As active members and a founding co-chair of the City Lights Giving Circle, they are committed to ensuring that all children—regardless of financial circumstances—can access Pretend City’s resources. “It’s beautiful to be part of this community and know we helped build something so special,” Jannie reflects. “Pretend City enhances the quality of life for every member of our community. It empowers children to grow into strong communicators, problem solvers, and contributing members of society—all while finding joy and fulfillment.”

Jannie and John’s story is a powerful reminder of what happens when families and communities come together to support play-based learning. Their vision and generosity help Pretend City continue its mission: building brighter futures through the power of imagination.
