Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day! – OPEN FULL DAY
January 18 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Specifically for – Children of all ages; Grown-ups
Details: Today, we will celebrate the life and times of Martin Luther King Jr. This American Civil Rights hero led millions of people in the fight for racial equity. Today is the perfect opportunity to visit Pretend City Children’s Museum to open discussion with your children about fairness, equality, friendship and peace. These child-friendly activities will help you do just that:
Smart Art: As children create their self-portrait, they will engage in discussions that show them that even though we are different in many ways (skin color, hair color, eye color, age, etc.) – everyone is special and we have many of the same hopes, dreams, and feelings on the inside. Your child can also create a Dove of Peace handprint to encourage peaceful play at home.
Sensational Storytime: Join us in Orange Plaza today at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for the reading of Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Robin Hill School) written by Margaret McNamara as we learn about the origins of this national holiday. After the reading children will engage in an art activity where they will be drawing a picture of their dreams for a better world.
Good to Go Game: Let your children learn to work together and play in peace as they cooperatively match the oversized peace puzzle pieces together.
Music & Movement: Dr. King had a dream of peace! What is your child’s dream? Come find out during this music, movement and activity time.
Play Partner: Pretendgineers and Brain Builders, our experienced stage staff of trained early childhood and child development educators, and grown-ups.
Grown-up Tip: Modeling respect through courtesy is a powerful tool. When children see their parents being respectful they learn to be respectful. Our children want to be just like us so use every moment as a teachable moment and model the desired behavior of respect in your daily interactions with others.
