What is a Children's Museum?

Children's museums are cultural institutions committed to serving the needs and interests of young children by providing interactive exhibits and programs that stimulate curiosity and motivate learning. There are approximately 250 children's museums around the world.

Children's museums differ from traditional art museums that have large rooms filled with "do-not-touch" exhibits of art and treasure.

Instead, children's museums are fun environments that offer engaging, hands-on, minds-on learning spaces that encourage problem solving and creative thinking. Here are a few ways in which children's museums fill a unique and valuable role for children, families and communities.

  • Children's museums help children develop essential foundational skills that set the stage for future learning.
  • Children's museums light a creative spark for discovery and lifelong learning.
  • Children's museums are environments where families play and connect in meaningful ways.
  • Children's museums strengthen and complement community resources (such as schools and libraries) that educate and care for children.
