Pretend City on Wheels Outreach Program

To begin fulfilling the mission of Pretend City prior to opening the facility, the outreach program called Pretend City on Wheels was launched in 2003.

Pretend City on Wheels is a "fieldtrip" experience that goes directly to schools. The program is as an effective and fun way for schools to add an additional layer of meaning, and an interactive component, to their social studies curriculum.

In this time of school budget cuts, Pretend City on Wheels also fills an important gap for many schools that are unable to afford an off site field trip experience.

Pretend City on Wheels is an interactive "city" where students role-play a profession with life-like costumes and real-life tools of the trade. They are presented with real-life scenarios that lead them to discover ways in which each profession must work together with others to solve community problems.

The program fulfills many of the California State Social Studies Standards for kindergarten through third grade. Most importantly, students increase their problem solving and critical thinking abilities. They learn how to work in teams. They gain an appreciation for, and knowledge of, the interconnectedness of a community. They become aware of a myriad of professions and begin to build career aspirations.

Building Better Brains is what Pretend City and Pretend City on Wheels are all about. Six thousand students annually are doing just that through this interactive, educational and fun program.

Teachers rave about Pretend City on Wheels.

"Your program is an excellent supplement in helping our students achieve state standards. It provided concrete, hands-on experiences that we as teachers are unable to provide in our classrooms. Pretend City is definitely a positive, exciting adjunct to our curriculum."
—Donna Wallace, Monroe Elementary
"Pretend City is a wonderful program that I would recommend to any school. It is fun, exciting, and meets state standards. The use of authentic regalia costumes, tools, and TV broadcasts really allowed my students to understand the concept of community. What I found to be especially pleasing was that my English Language Learners were also engaged and seemed to grasp the important concept of community. Thank you again for allowing us to be part of this truly amazing learning experience."
—Amy Capps, Jordan Elementary
"Thank you, thank you, thank you for sending Pretend City to our school! This educational opportunity was like a breath of fresh air for our students. Besides teaching Social Studies Standards, Pretend City encouraged students to use higher order thinking skills, such as synthesis, role-playing and evaluation. Additionally, students learned that cooperation with one another and interdependence are the keys to task accomplishment. They had a great time, learning by doing." —Caroline Boullon, Monroe Elementary
